Voices of Transition

Sunday 18th January 7:30pm. Film Showing: Voices of Transition

English-flyer_Voices-of-Transition_-723x1024Global environmental trends – climate change, peak oil and food insecurity are forcing us to confront problems with our industrial agricultural system. Powered by the conviction that these crises can be a major catalyst for positive change, ‘Voices in Transition’ casts a spotlight on the ‘Transition Town’ movement, introducing inspiring stories from France, England and Cuba.

Run time is 65 mins: you can read more and watch a trailer at http://voicesoftransition.org/  As usual, the showing takes place at St Mary’s Church, St Mary’s Road, Ealing W5 5AW. Entry is free, but we will ask for donations after the film to help us cover screening costs. After the screening, there will be an opportunity to explore the film’s messages over cakes and hot drinks.

New Projects

Thanks to all who attended ‘re-Imagining Ealing’s Future’ and the film ‘Powerful’

At the first, we explored the question ‘What additional steps can we take to grow wellbeing in our local community?’. At the second we asked ‘how do we start a renewable energy revolution in Ealing?

The first event yielded five ideas as follows

A Social Network / Hub for Elders.

This would engage the experience and skills of community Elders, channelling this into local activities, creating time, spaces and events for Elders, sharing skills and campaigning on important issues.

A Food Producers’ Network in Ealing and Southall

This would connect growing groups throughout the borough, enable the sharing of produce, creating a mutual support network and spreading awareness of the need to relocalise food in the local community

A ‘Unique Streets’ programme

This would foster community on a street-by-street basis, using NEF’s ‘five aspects of happiness’, namely Connect, Be Active, Take Notice, Keep Learning, and Give. Activities would include street parties, group play, eating together, community gardening and evening walks.

A Children’s Education Centre at Perivale Wood

This would act as a focal point for a deeper appreciation of nature and environment. Help is needed to finish building the new straw bale centre, develop community programmes, resource packs & publicity, capture memories from Elders and more.

Resource Re-Use

This project aims to reduce local waste through re-use and repurposing. The team aims to create an event to explore what ‘wastes’ could be utilised, and how these could be collected, stored and processed.

The second event yielded a number of ideas but chief among these was

Community Energy

We are keen to draw together a project team with interest and expertise in starting a community energy project in Ealing

Each of these projects has a lead contact person. If you would like to get involved in taking one or more of these ideas forward, please drop a line to steering@ealingtransition.org.uk and we will forward it to the project team.

Film Night: ‘Powerful’. Sunday, December 14th 7.30pm.

MOVIE_POSTER_LG_20OCT2010In ‘Powerful’, green economy educator David Chernushenko embarks on a global journey to examine the alternatives to the conventional energy system, experiencing the critical resistance being met along the way. Tackling the spin of the big energy lobby and, equally, dispelling the myths of a ‘green utopia’  Powerful is a candid examination of what a sustainable future could look like. From amazing innovators, eccentric eco-activists to average communities completely powered by renewable energy, David will begin to discover that the true power is in the political, economic and democratic change that the clean energy revolution can deliver.
