Planting Day

We are organizing a planting day on Saturday 29th March from 10-1pm at the Lammas Enclosure, between Walpole and Lammas Parks (near Will to Win Tennis)

With the kind support of the Walpole ward we will be planting fruit trees and bushes adjacent to the petanque playing area. This is the first wave of planting for what will, in time, become a forest garden – a food-growing space based on the structure of a young forest.

We will also be weeding and re-mulching fruit trees in the orchard, dead-hedging with recently-felled brush wood, and taming the brambles.

Please bring gloves and tools, branch cutters, secateurs etc if you have them

UWL Sustainable Buildings Evening

If you attended our showing of Gasland 2 on Sunday, you may have met with the MSc. researchers from University of West London who are studying the adaptability of new and old houses to Climate-Change related weather patterns; e.g. more frequent and hotter heat-waves, and more extreme rainfall events.

On Tuesday 25th March, UWL, conjunction with West London Business are holding an evening of talks about the work of the University in this area, covering energy efficiency and adaptability, and some of the state-of-the-art tools used for studying and planning adaptations.

The event is aimed at the Building Industry, but open to those with a strong interest in this area.

The event runs from 6pm to 8pm, at the St.Mary’s Road campus, with drinks and canapés after the talks in the award-winning Pillars restaurant (which, if you attended Edible Ealing’s 1st Birthday celebration, you know will be good!).

Tickets are free, but strictly require booking on a “first-come-first-served” basis.

Gasland 2

On Sunday 16th March at 7.30pm we are showing GASLAND 2, the explosive follow-up to Josh Fox’s Oscar-nominated film about hydraulic fracturing (‘fracking’), the controversial method of extracting natural gas and oil, now being carried out in 32 countries worldwide including the UK.

GASLAND 2 shows how the stakes have been raised on all sides in one of the most important environmental issues facing the planet. The film argues that the gas industry’s portrayal of natural gas as a clean and safe alternative to oil is a myth and that fracked wells inevitably leak over time, contaminating water and air, hurting families, and endangering the earth’s climate with the potent greenhouse gas, methane. In addition the film looks at how the powerful oil and gas industries are, in his words, “contaminating our democracy”.

With the UK government solidly behind the development of the fossil fuel shale gas industry, there has never been a more urgent need to make the case for clean, green energy.

There will be the usual hot drinks, cakes and discussion afterwards, and an opportunity to talk about the various initiatives we have running including changing your electricity supplier, and energy efficiency measures from DIY secondary glazing to ‘passive house’ retrofit.

As ever the event takes place at St Mary’s Church, St Mary’s Road Ealing W5 5RH. Entry is free but we will ask for donations to help us cover the cost of staging the event.
