Join us for our Community Fayre on 11th October!

For the past three years, our big annual event has been our Re-skilling Day, and we’ve been delighted with its success.

This year’s event continues the tradition established by Re-skilling Day, but, in keeping with Transition goals, also opens it to our thriving community businesses.

For our new Community Fayre,  we are teaming up with Ealing Mums in Business, so as well as learning new skills, you will be able to engage with and support the local economy. There will be lots of fantastic things to do, learn, buy and eat.

Mother: Caring for 7 Billion

After our customary summer break we are kicking off again on 14th September with a new film called ‘Mother: Caring for 7 Billion’, which is about population growth.

Since the 1960s the world population has nearly doubled, adding more than 3 billion people to the planet. Compounded with our ravenous appetite for natural resources, population growth is putting an unprecedented burden on the life system we all depend on, as we refuse to face the fact that more people equals more problems.

The film follows Beth, a mother and a children’s rights activist as she explores the complexities of the population issue. The film strives not to blame but to educate, to highlight a different path for humanity. Overpopulation is merely a symptom of an even larger problem – a system of domination that for most of human history has glorified the power of man over nature, man over woman and man over child. To break this pattern, the film demonstrates that we must change our conquering mindset into a nurturing one, and that the first step is to raise the status of women worldwide.

As usual the showing takes place at St Mary’s Church, St Mary’s Road, Ealing W5 5RH. Start time is 7.30pm and run time 69 minutes. Entry is free, but we will ask for a donation after the film to help us to cover screening costs.

Project Wild Thing

10066963776_5d8667f841_zProject Wild Thing is filmmaker David Bond’s record of his attempt to reconnect his own children – and indeed all of Britain’s children – with nature. Today’s young people stay indoors, unlike their parents and grandparents, who as children loved to roam free. A new generation is addicted to iPads and consoles, getting obese and insidiously depressed in the process, and parents are letting it happen. The outdoors is increasingly assumed to be dangerous, pointless and irrelevant.

“We think we’ve outgrown nature,” says Bond, and wonders if the way is to promote nature as a brand, so the kids can ‘get’ it and ‘choose’ it. With boyish enthusiasm, he devises ad strategies through billboards and social media to spread the good word, and gets out and about to talk to environmentalists like George Monbiot and Chris Packham.

After the film we will be holding our Annual Open Meeting, which is an informal opportunity to help us define our programme for the forthcoming year over a cuppa and a slice of cake.
