Film Night: The Earth’s Lawyer

13th February 2016, 7.30pm

The Earth’s Lawyer follows Polly Higgins and her ‘earth guardians’ on their missions throughout 2015. This militant lawyer combines compassion and charm with conviction and decisiveness. In special sessions she teaches people how to use their own talents in a practical way for a sustainable planet.

Our world knows four international crimes: war crimes, genocide, torture and crimes against humanity. Both Spanish examining magistrate Baltasar Garzon and Scottish lawyer Polly Higgins believe that this list of serious violations of international law should be expanded with a fifth: ecocide. Will Garzon and Higgins eventually succeed in gaining enough support to get recognition for ecocide, truly putting the large scale destruction of our ecosystems high on the international political agenda once and for all?

‘The Earth’s Lawyer’ will be followed by a short talk from Lucy Rees from the ‘End Ecocide on Earth’ campaign. There will then be an opportunity for discussion over tea and locally-made cake.

The event takes place at St Mary’s Church, St Mary’s Road, Ealing, W5 5RH. Entry is free, but we will ask for donations after the film to help us cover costs.

Film Night: This Changes Everything

Filmed over 211 shoot days in nine countries and five continents over four years, ‘This Changes Everything’ is an epic attempt to re-imagine the vast challenge of climate change.

Naomi Klein’s narration is interwoven with stories of struggle, connecting the carbon in the air with the economic system that put it there. Throughout the film, Klein builds to her most controversial and exciting idea: that we can seize the existential crisis of climate change to transform our failed economic system into something radically better.

Entry is free, but we will ask for donations after the film to help us cover costs. After the screening, there will be an opportunity to discuss the film’s messages over refreshments.

When: Sunday 24th January 7:30pm
Where: St Mary’s Church, St Mary’s Road, Ealing W5 5RH

Community energy update

A big thank you to all who invested in the Schools Energy Co-operative share offer in November. Together we beat the government-imposed deadline and the Co-op managed to raise the full £700,000 in two weeks!

This is a great result for local community-owned energy, both reducing carbon emissions and also giving local schools reduced electricity bills. Ealing Transition will now be working with SEC and Ealing Council to install solar panels on shortlisted schools. We will keep you updated as the project develops.
